Next weekend is the 40th anniversary of the premier of Picnic at Hanging Rock, and the National Film and Sound Archive is celebrating with an exhibition filled with costumes and props from the film, plus a screening on August 7.
Adapted from the 1967 novel by Joan Lindsey, the 1975 Peter Weir film tells the story of three schoolgirls who go missing during an outing to Victoria's Hanging Rock.
Four decades on, it's still a movie that actress Anne-Louise Lambert, who played Miranda in the film, is recognised for.
"I've sort of moved from acting as a career and I'm now a psychotherapist so it comes up less often in that world but it's still part of any week – a couple of times a week someone will bring it up or suddenly stare at me in a different way, a look of recognition will cross their face," she said.
Anne-Louise, who will be visiting Canberra to attend the special celebration, said she still gets asked if she knows what happened in the story, but is adamant she's no wiser than anyone else.
"Joan Lindsey said it's a mystery – there's not enough mysteries left in the world and I find it so interesting that people so want to have the answer or the solution. It just bugs people. All possibilities remain – we don't actually know."
The Picnic at Hanging Rock 40 years event is on Friday, August 7, with the exhibition from 5pm and the film screening in Arc Cinema from 7pm. Tickets $8-$10 from trybooking.com/HLHT.
