Fire crews were called to the home on Heagney Crescent, Gilmore, just after 10 am.
The two people at home had already evacuated and the blaze was put out by firefighters.
It damaged one bedroom while smoke damaged the rest of the home.
"During the festive season, ACT Fire & Rescue reminds all Canberrans that candles used for any reason including decoration, aromatherapy or lighting can pose a fire risk," the ESA said in a statement on Thursday.
"Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing."
