Students heading back to school in the capital are set to face scorching temperatures on their return to the classroom this week.

Kindergarten students starting school on Monday will be met with the temperature hitting 39 degrees for their first day.
It will be a similar situation for all other students when they return to class on Tuesday, with the mercury also rising to 39 degrees.
The Bureau of Meteorology is also forecasting the minimum temperature will be a warm 22 degrees on Tuesday.
The ACT Education Directorate has said procedures are in place across the territory to keep students cool.
While not all classrooms were equipped with air conditioning, a spokesman for the directorate said all schools had access to air-conditioned areas.
"For the start of the 2017 school year, all of our public schools have access to artificial cooling in at least one priority area of the school," the spokesman said.
"Priority areas include places like the library, front offices and specialist education facilities.
"While artificial cooling is not available in every classroom, each public school has a designated priority area that students can access."
The spokesman also said individual schools have specific plans in events of extreme heat, which is done in consultation with the principal and health and safety representatives.
Contingency plans listed by the directorate include limiting playground access to shaded areas, adjusting educational programs to different areas of the school to minimise heat stress as well as having easy access to water throughout the day.
Despite the temperatures, the directorate spokesman said it's hoped the heat-management plans won't have to be used by schools for many days this term.
"While it can be quite hot during the summer, the period of actual extreme heat in the school year is typically a short period in February each year," the spokesman said.
With tops of 39 on Monday and Tuesday, Canberra is set to be the hottest capital city on both days, with Sydney nudging 38 degrees on Tuesday.
Of the major cities, only Alice Springs will be warmer on Monday, with it expected to reach 41 degrees according to the bureau.
The forecast for the rest of the week in the ACT is expected to be cooler, with 31 and 29 degrees forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday respectively with the chance of a shower on both days.
The mercury is then tipped to climb back up to 34 on Friday.
