Barry Avery, 34, appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday where his solicitor Sarah Boxall entered pleas of not guilty on his behalf.

The alleged victim and several other men named in court documents had been drinking together at the victim's place on the afternoon of April 8.

At some point, a Coke can of MDMA went missing.

The victim was accused of stealing the drugs, and it's alleged the next day he was picked up from his Nicholls home and taken to a place in Palmerston.

Documents tendered to court at his last appearance suggest Mr Avery, with several others, taped the victim to a chair and grilled him about the drugs.

"Where's the gear?" it's alleged Mr Avery said.

The victim protested that he didn't know.

Police say several men took turns assaulting the victim in the head. Mr Avery is alleged to have punched the victim in the temple so he blacked out.

Mr Avery is said to have then held a pair of scissors to the man's neck and pressed them into his skin.

At one point, it's said the victim was waterboarded.

Still taped to the chair, the victim's head was tilted back, his face covered with a tea towel and water poured over the fabric in 20 second intervals - repeated eight times over a period of minutes.

When the tea towel was removed the victim allegedly saw Mr Avery, as well as several other men in the room, the court documents suggest.

Others have faced court in relation to the allegations.

Mr Avery has been charged with forcible confinement, blackmail, trafficking MDMA, trafficking cannabis and unlawful possession of stolen property.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The case is next due in court on August 8.
