Analysis of accident insurance claims from August 2015 to August 2016 showed almost 90 claims were lodged for crashes at three spots on the Monaro Highway.
The Monaro at Hume saw the most prangs, with 39 claims, but drivers who crashed on the highway through Fyshwick racked up 25 claims, and those who smashed south of Canberra lodged 24 claims.
Comparatively, Canberra Avenue at Fyshwick recorded 45 claims, down from 53 last year.
Northbourne Avenue also re-entered the top five after dropping off last year, coming in at number three, with 28 claims.
Jake Krausmann from AAMI said commuters and seasonal changes, particularly with the ski season for the Monaro Highway, could be behind the change in rankings.
"Canberra Avenue is one of the busiest roads in Canberra, and is heavily congested during peak times. Despite recent construction works in the area, this stretch of road continues to be notorious for car accidents," Mr Krausmann said.
"Some of these roads are also heavily populated with wildlife which contributes significantly to accidents along these stretches of road – unsurprisingly as our data also revealed Canberra to be ACT's worst hotspot for animal collisions."
Overall, the number of crash claims for each of the top five spots listed in the index were down.
Crash claims on Gundaroo Drive halved, causing it to slip from number two on last year's index to 11 on this year's.
