Narrabundah peacocks just the start of Mick Ashley's new calendar

Canberra artist Mick Ashley has already completed his 2019 calendar - and it's looking like a corker.

From Narrabundah's marauding peacocks to Canberra's ubiquitous kangaroos, Ashley captures the essence and soul of the national capital and then serves it up in full technicolour over-the-topness.

Ashley said he already had a "massive response'' to his artwork inspired by the raucous peacocks of Narrabundah, the committee working to keep them in the suburb even buying the image to use for their own purposes.

Then there's the Uber-driving kangaroo.

That's a nod to the sheer numbers of roos in the national capital, the marsupials making their way even further into the suburbs in search of feed during the drought.

"With the drought, the kangaroos are getting closer and closer to cars and it's almost like they're taking out jobs,'' Ashley said, tongue-in-cheek.

And you can't have a Mick Ashley calendar without some great insight into the public service culture.

One of the images in the calendar shows the superheroes of the public service, from "Captain DepSec'' to "The Incredulous Sulk" leaning on his books of "facts''.

"There's so much around about the Marvel heroes, it's a cute take on that,'' Ashley said.

"Just being immersed in that public service culture, you see that some superheroes don't wear capes.''

And Canberra is constantly throwing up new ideas for the artist, who has also released a coffee table book of his best images.

"All the time,'' he said. "But you've got to be mindful what might be a hot topic now, may not be in the future. It's kind of recurring things.''
