Shortened family visits breach inmates' human rights

ACT Corrections Minister Shane Rattenbury (Letters, April 15) says new visiting arrangements at the Alexander Maconochie Centre are an issue of equity and not cost-cutting. Yet the Canberra Times article "Jail to trial new visiting hours" (April 7, p5) quoted a government administrator saying that it was a cost-cutting measure. Also, we now have a six-month trial and not a one-month trial.
