Village Roadshow has boosted its full-year profit and says it is resilient in the face of difficult economic times as people escape to cinemas and into their homes with DVDs.
Village reported a 470 per cent increase in net profit to $256.9million for the year ended June 30 compared with $45.1 million for the preceding year.
That result was inflated by a one-off pre-tax gain of $184.7 million, from the merger of Village's film production business unit with US music merchant Concord Music to form Village Roadshow Entertainment Group.
Melbourne-based Village now holds just over 40 per cent of the group.
Net profit from continuing operations rose by 10 per cent to $62.2 million, driven by growth from the cinema exhibition, film distribution and radio businesses.
Chairman John Kirby said the company's healthy cash flows and strong balance sheet positioned it well to continue expanding, especially with its theme park operations.
During 2007-08, Village expanded those operations, acquiring parks and aquariums in Noosa, Auckland, Hawaii and Phoenix, Arizona.
Village reported a drop in attendance at its Gold Coast theme parks from 4.2 million to 4 million visits, and a 15.2 per cent fall in pre-tax profit for the division, down to $34.4million.
Village laid the blame, in part, on monsoonal weather. AAP
