Grammar nabs team title

27/08/2008 1:00:00 AM
Michael Baker continued his dominance on the Mt Stromlo mountain bike track, leading his Canberra Grammar team to the senior division ACT school championship yesterday.

The victory, with two fellow Grammar students, made it four wins from four attempts at the event.

More than 540 riders from 63 schools across the ACT and NSW took to the start line and tore around the 7km circuit for four hours.

Riders were split into teams of three or four in a tag-team style race around the course.

Whichever team completed the greatest number of laps in the allotted time was awarded the trophy. The winning teams completed more than 16 laps.

The win continued Baker's recent good form after he won the national under-17 cross country title in January.

''It was pretty tough out there today with the strong wind blowing it made it an even harder run,'' Baker said. ''But we have some good riders at Canberra Grammar and every time we have entered we have won.''

The 16-year-old began riding in 2002 when his dad started taking him riding to maintain his fitness.

Canberra College student Dan Dewitte led his team to the college division title in his last year of school competition.

After finishing in the top three in his previous two attempts, the 17-year-old year 12 student desperately wanted to finish on a high.

''Coming in we wanted one thing in our last year and we got it,'' he said.

''I guess we do it for the love and enjoyment and our teachers don't mind us taking a day off to go for a ride.

''Now we're pretty stoked. To win this year our final year that was our goal.''

The school event was a preview to one of the biggest mountain bike events to hit Canberra in recent years with the UCI World Cup round to be held at Mt Stromlo this weekend.

Australian Olympic team member Dan McConnell will return to the track after racing in Beijing.

Event organisers find out today if the Olympic gold medallists Sabine Spitz, of Germany, and Frenchman Julien Absalon will race.
