Erindale cheers as Pambula pays dearly for leers

Heckling has cost Pambula's Lumen Christi Catholic College the senior Brumbies Rugby Shield.

The South Coast school lost to the ACT's Erindale Secondary College 12-11 but only because its players sledged Erindale's place kicker during a conversion attempt in the game's dying minutes at O'Connor yesterday.

Lumen Christi made the early running in the final going out to an early 8-0 lead.

Erindale captain Tyler Listion said his side was under pressure to get back into the game.

''We gave them a fair lead and I didn't know if we could pull it back,'' Listion said.

Erindale responded with a try but Lumen kicked a penalty goal to lead 11-5 with only a couple of minutes remaining.

From a penalty tap Erindale spread the ball wide for fullback Tii Tamalemai to score close to the corner seconds before the bell.

Erindale flyhalf Mitch Day missed the conversion but the referee awarded him a second attempt after he was heckled by the Lumen players.

Day made no mistake with his second shot giving the Canberra school a 12-11 win.

The tournament features ACT and southern NSW high schools.

Caroline Chisholm High took out the Year 7 and 8 division while St Frances Xavier College was successful in the Year 9 and 10 category.

Tournament director and Brumbies development coordinator Adam Fahey praised the quality of play at the event.

''This tournament has become an important talent identification tool,'' Fahey said. ''We've seen a number of players go on to representative sides after this competition.''
