Strong cross winds measuring up to 72 km/h saw two of the three domestic runways closed after the Bureau of Meteorology issued a strong wind warning for Sydney and much of the NSW coast.

A Sydney Airport spokeswoman said planes were restricted to using only one runway due to the gusty conditions for most of the day.

Only domestic flights were impacted with the international runways continuing to operate as normal.

Virgin Australia cancelled about 40 flights, factoring in a backlog and Sydney Airport's strict arrival and departure curfew.

"Air Traffic Control has imposed single runway operations affecting a number of Virgin Australia flights. We are proactively communicating with affected customers and encourage those travelling to or from Sydney today to check the Virgin Australia Flight Status page for the most up-to-date information. We are working to have all passengers on their way as quickly as possible and thank our guests for their patience," a spokesperson said.

About 30 Qantas flights were also impacted.

The winds are forecast to persist on Friday morning yet ease throughout the day.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said winds will be consistent yet not as strong as Thursday.

Due to a backlog, domestic passengers arriving into and leaving from Sydney Airport are being urged to check their flight details with their airlines.
