Police say a man who died on the M1 emergency lane at the Gold Coast was working underneath his broken-down ute when it rolled on top of him after being hit by another car on Sunday.

The 25-year-old Redcliffe man had pulled over onto the shoulder of the M1 at Helensvale after the engine in his silver Holden Rodeo ute failed about 11.30am.
Police said the man was working on the engine when a red Hyundai rear-ended the ute, pinning the man underneath his vehicle.
He died at the scene. The 33-year-old driver of the other car was not seriously injured.
The crash blocked two northbound lanes as the Forensic Crash Unit investigated, with more than six kilometres of congestion stretching back to Nerang throughout the afternoon.
Australian Traffic Network reporter Olympia Kwitowski said the motorway reopened just before 3.30pm and delays quickly cleared.
Police investigations were ongoing and investigators appealed for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward.
