Cheika says he made the "logical decision" to pick Uelese ahead of Moore as the back-up rake on the Wallabies' bench for a clash against Argentina at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night.

Moore missed the Test against South Africa last week to be with wife Courtney for the birth of the couple's third child.

He rejoined the Wallabies squad in the capital this week, but he faces a massive challenge to win back the hooker role before he finishes his international career at the end of the year.

"[Uelese] is a player we're looking to bring on for sure, and I think the idea of giving him a couple of games in a row is a smarter idea than ... getting him to cool his jets and come back later on," Cheika said.

"We'll give him a game right off the back of his debut and get him a feel of what it's like back to back.

"Of course [it was a hard decision], but we've got a plan with where we're headed with the construction of the team and I think it's the logical decision.

"Stephen will get himself right with some hard training under the belt to get right for the tour [of South Africa and Argentina."

Cheika axed ACT Brumbies lock Rory Arnold from the game-day squad, challenging the 209 centimetre second-rower to be consistent with his performances.

Rob Simmons will replace Arnold in the starting XV, while Izack Rodda has been added to the bench.

"I want to make sure that every player knows that consistency's important," Cheika said.

"Rory played at, I thought, an excellent standard in the Dunedin game [against New Zealand two weeks ago]. He needs to maintain that standard all the time."

Uelese keeps his spot as Tatafu Polota-Nau's deputy and NRL convert Marika Koroibete is set to make his Test debut from the bench.

Moore's omission means he will have just one more chance for a home farewell before calling time on his Wallabies career.

The Wallabies have one home Test left this year, with a clash against New Zealand in Brisbane on October 21 looming as a perfect chance to send Moore out as a winner.

"We know Stephen has put a finish line on his international career so we need to be ready for that," Cheika said.

"As well as meeting the challenges that you have on a day-to-day basis here. He knows that but at the same time, I think that'll keep him pretty motivated for the rest of the time he's with us."
