He is Australian cricket's Rocky Balboa - the talent was always there, he just needed a shot. When he got it, the 24-year-old took it with both hands.

Sheffield Shield team of the year member Rogers will play a key role for Tasmania in the Shield final against the Queensland Bulls at Allan Border Field beginning on Friday.

A Shield win would cap off a dream debut season for Rogers, who has gone from the ACT Comets to Big Bash League and Shield deciders in 12 months.

The most nervous Rogers had been before the Big Bash final was right before his first interview for a job as a teacher - but the big games are quickly becoming par for the course.

"It's pretty bloody unreal isn't it mate. If someone told me that was going to happen even six months ago I would have told them to shut up," Rogers laughed.

"You have 'pinch yourself' moments every day. But when you look at some of the few games we've had and what we've got coming up, and what happened with the Canes as well, there's definitely some pinch yourself moments and some great memories that I'll look back on for sure.

"[There is] a bit of nerves, a bit of hype and excitement. We're just trying to embrace the experience and enjoy it as much as we can."

The 24-year-old's parents will be perched up in the Allan Border Field pavilion and Rogers hopes the rest of the family can make it after some prior commitments wrap up.

Rogers has enjoyed a phenomenal debut season and sits third on the competition's leading wicket-takers list with 35 from nine games at an impressive average of 17.31.

The Weston Creek Molonglo junior has stood up at crucial times throughout the season and one needn't look any further than his knock of 80 against reigning champions Victoria to help the Tigers into the decider.

Tasmania are hunting for their first triumph since 2012-13, which also came against Queensland. It's been a long time coming so Rogers is desperate to take the Shield back to a state boasting "mountains and rivers and fish as far as the eye can see".

"You can't look too far ahead but it would be pretty awesome to take it back down to Hobart, that's for sure," Rogers said.

"It's been a couple of years in the making. There were a few questions at the start of this year as to where things might go. I think everyone was pretty understanding that we had a few improvements to make and some changes, different paths to take on approach.

"[We thought] that might take two or three years in the making but I guess we skipped a couple of chapters on a results perspective on where we might have seen ourselves.

"There is definitely a few changes and adjustments to individuals and the team approach, or the structure, that they will want to make to make sure we keep moving forward and not just stay in the same position and get overtaken."

Rogers was revealed as one of five new faces to earn a full-time contract with Cricket Tasmania some three months after leaving the mainland to pursue a chance with the Tigers.

Australian cricket's pay dispute meant finances were stretched thin for a youngster chasing a professional contract. But no matter how much of a beating his back pocket took, Rogers was never going to let the door close on his dream.

Now he is five days away from the pinnacle of domestic cricket.
