Bridge works to start soon

Work is expected to start within the next month pending any pre-construction activities required to be completed and ongoing discussions with the successful tenderer regarding sequencing and programing of the works.

The Yowaka Creek Bridge is a partial replacement and includes an upgrade of the existing timber pier and western abutment to a reinforced concrete structure.

The work to be undertaken to Murrabrine Creek Bridge is the first stage of a remedial works program and includes replacement of the existing timber northern abutment with a reinforced concrete structure.

Murrabrine Creek Bridge and Yowaka Creek Bridge were identified for renewal in the 2016/17 bridge replacement program. Both projects are a continuation of a staged program of works and this stage will see the bridge sub structures completely renewed, council’s director transport and utilities Terry Dodds told council at the recent meeting, adding that the bridges were at the end of their life.

“Design investigations concluded replacement of the timber structures with reinforced concrete provides the highest economic benefit, taking into account reduction in maintenance, increased carrying capacity and extended life expectancies of concrete structures,” Mr Dodds said.

In a reference to the issues surrounding recent work on Wyndham’s Pretty Point Bridge, councillor Robyn Bain was quick to ask if there were any historic issues associated with the Nethercote and Cobargo bridges.

Mr Dodds said he would take the question on notice but general manager Leanne Barnes said the bridges were not listed on the heritage register.

Councillor Jo Dodds asked about communication with the communities affected to which Ms Barnes replied that it would be something that South East Civil and Crane would be be responsible for while council would advertise that the work was going to take place.

The work is scheduled for completion within the 2017/2018 financial year.
