Queensland police are investigating how filing cabinets containing police documents came to be found at a waste facility in the state's north on Tuesday.

Police said the cabinets might have been accidentally thrown out while furniture was being removed after water damage at Cairns Police Station.
The files were found at a Barron commercial waste facility, about 14 kilometres from the station.
"Upon being alerted by staff at the facility, police immediately attended and removed the filing cabinets," a Queensland Police Service spokesman said.
"The QPS takes its responsibility of handling sensitive and private information very seriously and is undertaking inquiries to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the matter."
The Ethical Standards Command has been advised of the incident.
