The 3113 entries for this year's National Photographic Portrait Prize have been whittled down to 40 finalists.

The competition, which has been running since 2007, offers a $30,000 cash prize plus Canon photographic equipment worth more than $22,000.
One of the finalists is Jamila Toderas, who has been a photographer at The Canberra Times since May 2014.
She specialises in news photography and creative portraiture and shoots across other Fairfax publications including: Good Food, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.
It's the 29 year old's first time as a finalist for the National Photographic Portrait Prize.
The selected portraits will be revealed at the exhibition launch at the National Portrait Gallery on February 22, 2019, where the winner will also be announced.
After the exhibition wraps on April 7, it will come to a town near you during the national tour.
