The Canberra Liberals' Candice Burch has won a countback of 2016 ACT election preferences to secure the Kurrajong seat in the Legislative Assembly vacated after Steve Doszpot's death last month.

But Ms Burch will not be confirmed until an official announcement, expected on Wednesday, as the Electoral Commission allows for some time for any successful candidate in a casual vacancy countback to resign from any relevant public office if needed.
The formal swearing in ceremony for Ms Burch to take the seat is expected in the second week of February next year when the Assembly returns from its summer recess.
Ms Burch is an economist who has worked as an assistant director at the federal finance department, but has recently returned home from a working holiday in the United States and Canada.
She said it was an honour and a privilege to be elected to represent the people of Kurrajong, and she planned to continue Mr Doszpot's work in the role.
Ms Burch said one of the key issues she would be examining was housing affordability for young Canberrans, something she had personal experience of and was concerned about, given the rising cost of living.
She said her experience in the finance department also meant she had a good understanding of how government worked and the "unintended consequences of government decisions", which she would bring to the role.
Canberra Liberals leader Alistair Coe welcomed Ms Burch to his team.
"Candice has been an active member of the community since moving to Canberra to study, volunteering in local events and campaigning for better outcomes," he said in a statement.
"She has a bachelor of economics and arts from the ANU, and has worked on six federal budget papers at the Department of Finance. Her academic and professional background has fuelled her passion to ensure all Canberrans receive the best possible outcome from government decisions.
"Passionate about seeing good government return to Canberra, Candice wants to see the government return its focus to things that really matter."
Canberra Liberals president Arthur Potter has previously described Ms Burch as an "incredibly hard worker" and a "very intelligent, good person" with "solid Liberal values".
The seat became vacant when Mr Doszpot died after a nine-year career in the Legislative Assembly.
He died late last month, about a month after announcing he had terminal liver cancer and was resigning from the Assembly.
