Wedding costs are set to soar as the same sex marriage vote unleashes decades of pent-up demand for celebrants, churches, venues, caterers, and - yes - fancy cakes.

In what may be one of the economy's isolated inflation hot-spots over coming quarters, the nation's wedding industry - estimated by some measures to be worth $2 billion a year - is about to experience a bonanza.
Some of the more breathless analysis about the benefits of a successful Yes vote suggest the economy as a whole will enjoy a big boost.
Those claims are probably overblown. Increased spending will be great for those in the marriage game; it's unlikely to shift national gross domestic product by much, or for very long.
But for the near 120,000 straight couples who marry each year in Australia, there may be some logic in delaying their nuptials for a year or so to allow the boom to pass.
There is expected to be an additional 39,000 same-sex couples who will take advantage of the right to marry, according to an estimate by ANZ Bank.
For any industry a potential 33 per cent surge in overnight demand tends to be inflationary.
Saul Eslake, an independent economist, agrees there may be a rise in weddings costs, though he said it was very hard to be confident about the extent of any "price surge".
He likened the current situation to the jump in breakups that followed the Whitlam government's liberalisation of divorce laws more than four decades ago, saying it took a few years rather than months to satisfy the released demand.
"Obviously there wasn't a surge in 'divorce celebrations' back then (as there presumably will be for same-sex marriage celebrations) but perhaps family lawyers were able to put their fees up - they certainly would have experienced a flood of new business," he said.
"Although I can't quantify it, I think there is something to be said for the probability of small but lasting benefits from improvements in mental health, reduction in suicide ideation, etc., among members of the LTGBIQ community as a result of greater acceptance, less discrimination," he said.
Early last year, PWC estimated that the mental health cost of a rancorous same sex marriage debate would amount to about $20 million.
With those concerns now fading, most are focussed on the upside of Wednesday's yes vote.
Stephen Green and Ian Wall - who have been together 2 1/2 years - are planning a family wedding in West Yorkshire, UK, followed by a "lavish party" in Sydney. They said the positive outcome would help influence their decision on whether to settle in the UK or Australia.
"The financial implications of marriage are massive," said Mr Green. "We have properties in both countries... as two professionals, where do we spend our lives?"
Already many in the wedding industry are smacking their lips at the prospect of well-heeled same sex couples entering the market.
Already handing out flyers to new would-be clients at the official marriage equality announcement in Surry Hills was president of the Master Celebrants Association Martin Moroney.
Moroney predicts same-sex couples will be "spending big" on their weddings. "It's the whole double-income no kids thing," he said.
"A lot of same-sex couples are more artistic. They've got different flair about visuals and they cost a lot of money.
Mr Moroney said a recent survey showed people spent on average $64,500 on weddings.
"It will boost the economy. I've got a feeling a lot of same-sex couples have had the societal pressure and tend to be more flamboyant and it will be exhibited in their marriage ceremonies.
"We'll see. They'll go all out to validate their relationship in front of family and friends."
Cherelle Murphy, at ANZ Bank, earlier this year estimated that the pent-up same sex marriage demand means there will be a "pull forward" in wedding-related consumption - as was the case in the Australian Capital Territory in the days following the temporary legislation introduced in 2013.
Ms Murphy described five immediate economic benefits of marriage equality; increased spending across retail, hospitality, arts and professional services (for pre-nups and divorce); increased services exports due to visitors marrying and honeymooning in Australia; the return of SS couples that would otherwise have married overseas; increased state government revenue from licence fees, and; a potential lift in consumer confidence given marriage equality has majority support.
Given the average spend on a week is $51,000, Wednesday's vote could add between $500 million to $550 million in spending to the economy in 12 months. If half the population of SS couples chose to marry within a year, that number could be more than $1 billion.
While that may sound like a lot, in a $1.7 trillion economy, that's equivalent to just 0.06 per cent of GDP.
Ms Murphy said on Wednesday that the marriage industry is too small to have any impact on overall inflation. "Having said that, there could be demand surges in some sectors - wedding venues for example and so pockets of temporary prices rises.
"Retail sales are so soft right now though (unless Q3 proves to be temporary) that demand led inflation due to this factor seems unlikely."
