"I didn't know I was speeding" was the response of a 19-year-old male driver from Chester Hill, Sydney, when Traffic and Highway Patrol Command caught him speeding on the Hume Highway at Jugiong.

At 6.33am on Friday, he was detected travelling at 147km/h on the highway.

The driver then increased his speed to 167km/h.
He was stopped and produced a P1 licence (limited to 90km/h).
The driver was issued an infringement for exceeding his speed limit by more than 45km/h ($2384) and an infringement for not displaying P plates.
His licence was suspended on the spot for six months. The vehicle was not confiscated as it did not belong to him.
