But all rules, including blue and green should never been seen, were broken on Wednesday as more than 400 members of the fashion, arts and creative industries gathered wearing the colours of the rainbow in support of marriage equality.
A Place To Call Home star Marta Dusseldorp, Love Child's Miranda Tapsell and her co-star Sophia Forrest, daughter of mining magnate Andrew 'Twiggy' Forrest, as well as editors from Vogue, InStyle and Elle, bloggers, celebrities and stylists flocked to Sydney's Hyde Park like ibises to bins to bring the rainbow flag to life.
The colourful turn out was co-ordinated by two of Australia's most influential publicists, Adam Worling and Marie-Claude Mallat.
The pair, who both run their own PR agencies, decided to come together in support of the Yes campaign and remind those who have not received their postal vote in the mail to contact the ABS.
Worling and Mallat, who have both been in the fashion industry for 30 years, are usually responsible for some of Sydney's most popular and most exclusive events, including David Jones' bi-annual fashion launches, and look after clients like Net-A-Porter. But both were surprised at the immediacy of the support their joint "We Say Yes" event received.
"We had 300 people confirmed to attend within 48 hours of our email invites going out," Worling said.
"RSVPs to great events which have things like champagne and goodie bags usually trickle in but with this, the response was immediate and overwhelming," Mallat added.
"When our government isn't doing the right thing, it's important for industries and people like us to step up," she said. "I wanted to do this mainly for my children who are 14 and 12 to teach them about the importance of equality and respect and to not be complacent about things that matter."
As of Wednesday, 18 of the nation's federal, state and territory government and opposition leaders had cast their "yes" vote, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Just one, ACT opposition leader Alistair Coe, has voted no.
