The capital was freezing as the Canberra Raiders hosted the Cowboys, with the Bureau of Meteorology listing the temperature at 0.6 degrees when the game began and nearly -2 degrees by full-time.
Townsville was experiencing a pretty warm day so Canberra's big freeze was a rude shock early on, with Thredbo experiencing warmer conditions than the capital on Saturday.
It mattered not as the Cowboys' 31-18 win left the Raiders' season hanging by a thread, sitting three wins out of the top eight with eight games remaining.
Not the response Stuart wanted
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart appeared to drop a piece of paper and turn away from his players during the half-time break. Read into that what you will, but if he was sending a message to say "it's over to you", the response wasn't what he was looking for.
Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt was flying down the sideline in the 42nd minute and looked a chance to extend the lead before Raiders half Aidan Sezer sent him hurtling over the sideline.
The Raiders playmaker stood over him like Muhammad Ali did to Sonny Liston, but after that highlights were few and far between with last tackle options becoming a shambles.
To make matters worse, centre Joey Leilua's ill-discipline saw him sin-binned with less than three minutes left and could land him in strife at the judiciary.
Depth of despair
It's not often the Canberra Raiders go into a clash with just one hooker, but that's exactly what they had to do against the Cowboys thanks to a case of bad timing.
The Raiders signed Adam Clydsdale's release forms on Friday morning before the captain's run - a session starting hooker Josh Hodgson failed to get through with a calf strain.
It left Kurt Baptiste to shoulder the load, but the Raiders are hopeful Hodgson will be back after the bye to face the St George Illawarra Dragons on a Friday night as they look to keep their season alive.
Captain Crook-er
During Canberra's golden run that launched the Green Machine deep into the 2016 finals, nearly everything went to plan. But this time around their season is hanging in the balance.
Every game is fast becoming a must-win for the Raiders, who are now sweating on the fitness of Hodgson and skipper Jarrod Croker after he hobbled off a head injury assessment midway through the first half.
Croker came off second best in a collision with Cowboys centre Justin O'Neill and backed up on the next play to make a huge tackle, but twisted his left knee in the process.
The first effort led to a failed HIA test, before his second saw him re-injure the same knee he hurt both at the end of last season, and in the NRL All Stars game in February.
