Sunday night's powerful six-wicket win over the Hobart Hurricanes, set up by Watson's 55 from 31 balls, moved the BBL's bottom team to four points and into the ladder logjam at the bottom of the table in a season where every side is still a chance of making finals.
Last season's premiers have joined both Melbourne sides, the Adelaide Strikers and the Hurricanes on two wins for the season ahead of next weekend's mouth-watering derby clash with the Sydney Sixers.
And the Thunder will take plenty of momentum into that fixture after comfortably chasing down the Hurricanes' 8-161 - four days on from Eoin Morgan's last-ball heroics felled the Stars at Spotless Stadium.
That was Morgan's last game for the Thunder, but he's been ably replaced, it would seem, by fellow England talent James Vince, who smashed 44 off 28 opening the batting on debut for Sydney.
But it was Watson's return to form that looks to have recalibrated this ship.
Prior to Sunday night he'd made six runs in three matches this season.
The six he belted off Cameron Boyce into the top tier of the Ricky Ponting stand early in his innings looks to have belatedly kick-started his BBL season.
What followed was a brutal display of power hitting from the Thunder captain, who blasted the Hurricanes attack to all part of the ground, and over the rope and into the 17,939-strong crowd on five occasions.
By the time he was dismissed, caught behind off Dan Christian's bowling, only 19 runs were required from 31 balls.
Out strode the latest West Indian to play for the Thunder, Carlos Brathwaite, in his first game as Andre Russell's replacement, and he combined with Ben Rohrer to chisel away at Hobart's total.
With just one run to go, Brathwaite holed out to long off and it was left to Pat Cummins to hit the winning runs.
Earlier on, George Bailey put his one-day axing behind him to rescue a stuttering Hurricanes innings with a well-made 69 from 54 as Hobart recovered to post 8-161.
The Thunder started brilliantly in the field and had the home side reeling at 2-10 before Bailey strode to the crease, barely 24 hours after being told by Australian selectors that he wouldn't be required for national duty in the forthcoming ODI series against Pakistan.
Bailey was replaced by Big Bash superstar Chris Lynn as one of three changes to Australia's 14-man squad. Aaron Finch and Hilton Cartwright were also dropped in favour of Usman Khawaja and Billy Stanlake.
