A splurge of $20 million on Gungahlin schools will see new classrooms, upgraded halls, expanded gymnasiums, and space for an extra 680 students, the government says.

The population explosion in Gungahlin, coupled with an increase in public education enrolments, has put pressure on existing schools in the region.
A new school in north Gungahlin is expected to be completed in late 2018, but the package announced on Friday is designed to upgrade existing schools in Harrison, Amaroo, Neville Bonner, and Palmerston Primary Schools.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr, in announcing the money on Friday, also said the government was on track to meet a pledge made before its last election to spend $70 million on school infrastructure.
Education Minister Shane Rattenbury said Gungahlin had seen a 66.8 per cent increase in public school enrolments in the past five years, alongside a 45 per cent population growth in the same period.
He said the government would table school projections for other areas of the ACT in the Legislative Assembly next week.
"This package is about delivering the capacity that we need in Gungahlin, so the parents can have the confidence that we have space for their children in our Gungahlin schools," Mr Rattenbury said.
"These schools are all facing significant pressure, the government is committed to keeping up with that growing population pressure her in Gungahlin," he said.
Amaroo will see additional classrooms and an expanded gymnasium, while Harrison will get new learning spaces.
There will also be new and expanded "primary and preschool facilities" for Palmerston and Neville Bonner Primary Schools.
The $20 million commitment will be made in next week's ACT budget, which Mr Barr said would manage to bring the economy closer to surplus.
"Through this budget, we're aiming not only to return to balance and then surplus, but also deliver on the important service needs for this community," Mr Barr said.
"In the context of a very lively debate in this country about education funding, we think it's very important to demonstrate our credentials both in terms of capital investment ... but also on the recurrent side in employing more teachers and focussing on teacher quality."
