An ACT man underwent emergency surgery to his jaw following the alleged assault outside the East Row Supa 24 convenience store in Civic, shortly before 3am on New Year's Day.
CCTV footage shows the victim in a tense conversation with one man before another steps in and punches him to the ground.
One bystander is seen to rush to the man's aid.
ACT Policing called for witnesses to the attack in the hope the public would be able to identify the perpetrator.
In a statement, police said the Braddon man, aged in his 20s, handed himself in at City Police Station this afternoon and was helping with their investigation.
Police thanked the public for their help and said their investigation into the incident was continuing.
Lead investigator Constable Jarrad Drennan said the victim was now at home recovering and had contacted police the day after the attack.
He would not comment on whether the victim knew his attacker.
