Lucky to have survived a life-threatening condition, Ruth Henderson will embark on a Long Walk in her commitment to raise $60,000 and give back to the hospital that saved her life.

Ms Henderson was treated in Haematology Acute Care at Canberra hospital for a severe blood condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation.
"I had a couple of transfusions. The [condition] takes your fibronigen and you can't clot, you bleed out, literally," she said.
Due to the seriousness of the illnesses treated in the haematology and oncology in-patient wards, their atmosphere was in stark contrast with others at the hospital.
Sterilisation concerns meant the walls couldn't be decorated with paintings or pictures. Even flowers weren't allowed, due to risk of infections which could become life-threatening.
"If you were dealing with children, [the ward] would be full of colour, life and encouragement. We need to do that for adults," she said.
Ms Henderson's walk around Lake Burley Griffin will begin at Regatta Point and end at Canberra Hospital, covering 80 kilometres over four days. Her resolve to raise funds by walking was even more admirable considering she also had her hip replaced in 2013.
To provide a warmer and more positive environment to severely ill patients, funds raised will to go buying TVs for all the beds in those wards, as well as licences for artwork by Marzena Wasikowska.
Featuring a slowly moving montage revealing a stunning waterfall panorama, the digital artwork was designed specifically to provide a distraction for very ill patients.
"If we can get the artwork to every single patient, it would be fantastic and allow people to be restful, at peace and hopeful," she said.
Health Minister Simon Corbell said donations supplemented the work of health services, helping the hospital provide added comfort for patients going through hard times.
"Ruth's commitment to giving back to the hospital is exemplary and both the Canberra hospital and I are very grateful for her support," he said.
Ms Henderson couldn't speak highly enough of the staff at the Canberra Hospital. "From the time I was admitted to discharged, I couldn't have had better care. They're wonderful people and the acute health services they give in the ACT is second to none," she said.
