Staff left the restaurant when the automatic sprinklers - which had put out the fire by the time the fire crews arrived - came on.
"There were no injuries and firefighters say the automatic alarm system prevented the fire spreading." the Emergency Services Agency said in a statement.
"Damage has been confined to water from the automatic sprinkler system.
"Firefighters conducted atmospheric testing in the restaurant and the nearby public area of the Canberra Centre, giving it the all clear."
Authorities closed part of Bunda Street between Scott's Crossing and Mort Street for a period at lunchtime.
Four ACT Fire & Rescue trucks parked along the shareway and pedestrians were unable to access the north quarter entrance to the centre below the cinema.
