Stockholm is an original musical theatre piece inspired by classics such as Chicago and Sweeney Todd and crime stories such as Murder, She Wrote and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
Director and co-writer Bronte Forrester says, ''I've always loved murder mysteries and crime shows. Strong women interest me. I thought about the storyline first and then realised the similarities between it and a well-known psychological syndrome - hence the name Stockholm.''
In it, detective Dianne Johnson finds herself trapped in the man's world of 1930s Brooklyn. The score contains plenty of jazz standards performed by a live band.
Forrester wrote the musical as an assignment in her final year at Orana Steiner School.
''I decided to create a project that would also raise money for charity. Because the characters in the musical feature the challenges faced by women, I chose a charity all about strength and women. Bosom Buddies is a unique not-for-profit organisation that provides personal support via a network of volunteers to breast cancer patients, their families and supporters in the ACT and surrounding region. It receives no government funding.''
The project included writing, casting, producing, promoting and fund-raising so she could stage the performance. She held a garage sale in June to kick-start the funding and then hosted a gala launch event for Stockholm and Bosom Buddies at the Woden Tradies in August. Stockholm has been developed and produced for educational purposes only. All proceeds will be donated to Bosom Buddies.
