Few voters forgive broken promises

A the election looms and the budgetary position worsens, the issue of election commitments becomes more pressing, especially for the Coalition. So far, Tony Abbott has been able to enjoy the luxuries of opposition, confining himself to a few catchy promises (abolish the carbon and mining taxes, institute paid-parental leave) without having to spell out an overall fiscal position. The government, by contrast, has undergone the wrenching discipline of regular financial reporting and is about to face the formidable test of presenting a detailed budget in a deteriorating fiscal outlook.
