Labor will push for a cap on how much money political parties can spend during election campaigns amid fears mining magnate Clive Palmer's record $60 million spend may have contributed to its loss at last weekend's federal election.

Labor MPs will also ask the joint parliamentary committee that will examine the 2019 election to extend media blackout rules to include digital advertising.
As Labor begins its election post mortem, some operatives are blaming the loss on Mr Palmer after he spent months bombarding voters with bright yellow advertising that criticised outgoing leader Bill Shorten's economic management.
"Expenditure caps need to be looked at. I'm uncomfortable with the exemption to electronic advertising. We need to look at the timing of it too," one Labor MP said, referring to the media blackout that is in place from the Wednesday night before election day until polls close.
The blackout was first put in place when only traditional forms of advertising - such as newspaper and radio ads - existed.
But the rules have not been changed to include social media which is becoming the dominant form of political advertising.
Mr Palmer spent $53.6 million on television, radio and newspaper advertising during the federal election. The Liberal Party spent $14.5 million and Labor spent $13.3 million.
But the overall figures will be higher because the amount spent by parties on outdoor and digital advertising is unknown.
Mr Palmer's United Australia Party received 3.4 per cent of first preferences nationally - or one vote for every $107 of advertising spend.
Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek accused Mr Palmer of trying to "trash" the Labor Party with his advertising campaign.
"Obviously we faced a cashed-up scare campaign from the United Australia Party, $80 million is the estimate of how much Clive Palmer spent; not to, it seems, win himself a spot, but to trash Labor," Ms Plibersek said in an interview with the ABC's Insiders' program on Sunday morning.
A comprehensive review of each federal election is completed by the bipartisan Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters.
It is also likely to look at the record number of people - 4.76 million - who prepolled with senior figures in both the Coalition and Labor parties suggesting the time period in which prepolling is allowed should be shortened.
Labor MP Andrew Giles, who sits on the committee, said, "We shouldn't be too reactive in terms of our consideration of what the election means and how we do things in the future. There should be a proper review into things like the influence of money".
The Liberal Party did not respond to requests for comment.
It will suggest to the committee that all third party volunteers - including GetUp - be banned from campaigning outside polling booths, limiting their campaign presence to those helping out political parties and independent candidates.
The proposal has been criticised by both progressive and conservative activist groups.
"I haven't seen the proposal in detail but more voices are better than less voices and we should have a robust debate on the issues," Gerard Benedet, national director of conservative activist group Advance Australia, said.
GetUp national director Paul Oosting accused the Liberal Party of attempting to stymie political competition.
