The ACT Government announced yesterday the purchase of a Duffy home for patients and carers, which would enable them to be supported in a ''home-like environment'' during treatment and recovery.
The property, which will have six suites and a common area, will be renovated before becoming operational mid-next year.
Minister for Health Katy Gallagher said the home would house Capital Regional Cancer Service patients and their carers during treatment. ''It will be ... for cancer patients and their carers for whom long distances make it too difficult to travel to and from their own homes on a daily basis,'' she said.
''The advantage ... is that the patient and their carer are away from the treatment facility, which aids their recovery.''
Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann said the Federal Government put almost $2 million towards the property purchase - on top of almost $30 million in federal government funding towards a new Cancer Centre at Canberra Hospital.
