Fire crews arrived at the Dumas Street house about 8.30pm to find the garage engulfed in flames.
Several firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, which spread quickly to the rest of the home.
McKellar resident Lazo Stankovic woke to the sound of ''explosions'' coming from the home.
''The fire was small at first, but the flames quickly came over the roof,'' he said.
The home's occupant was inside the property when it caught fire but was safely evacuated.
Forensics will conduct an analysis this morning to determine the cause of the fire.
Waramanga fire
In a separate incident, four residents of a Waramanga home were safely evacuated after a fire started in their laundry room last night.
Initial investigations indicated the fire started in an operating dryer.
