Former superior of the Jesuit community in Canberra, John Eddy, died on Sunday, aged 78.

A resident of Canberra since August 1968, he was also a senior fellow in history at the ANU from 1972 to 1988.
Superior of the community Frank Brennan said yesterday Father Eddy was an extraordinary pastoral presence around Canberra. He would be greatly missed in Canberra's churches, coffee houses and corridors of academe.
He had been firm in his views and passionate about migration and his concern for refugees.
Father Eddy was born in Western Australia on March 6, 1933. He was educated at St Louis' School, Perth, and Xavier College, Melbourne. After matriculation, he studied at Campion College at the University of Melbourne and Oxford University.
He served as superior of the Jesuit Community at Yarralumla for about 20 years.
His funeral and Requiem Mass will be on Friday at St Christopher's Cathedral, Manuka.
A Vigil Service will begin at 7.30pm tomorrow at St Peter Chanel's Church, Yarralumla.
