RSPCA ACT chief executive Michael Linke said the tan wolf hound first came to his Weston animal shelter in December 2009.
He left today as the 26,346th animal to be housed since computerised records began in 1995. On average, it finds new homes for 2200 animals per year.
It had meant to be a brief stay. His owner was sick and he was going to be there for a month or so as part of the society's pet support program.
"Sadly Mishka's owner died during this time and RSPCA was asked to find Mishka a new home," he said.

In his 700 days with the RSPCA, Mishka ate 1500 meals and went on 1100 walks.
"It's been a long and tough road for Mishka, but a road that today ends with a home, a home living on 200 acres in western NSW where he can stretch his legs and run and jump, two of his favourite things,'' he said.
Mr Linke said Mishke was a big boy, who could "jump eight, ten foot fences with a single bound".
"So we knew we were looking for a special family with a back yard, or property that could both afford Mishka security, and also allow him to exhibit his natural behaviours,'' he said.
"He loves to chase, he loves to run and he loves the company of people and we have been able to find a home for him. "
