ACT Policing said the victim had been walking along Wilbow Street about 11.30pm and, after hearing someone walking behind her, had turned to see a man holding what police believe was a replica firearm.
The man threatened her and told her to hand over her handbag.
Thinking the man was holding a toy firearm, the woman refused.
Police say the man walked away and was last seen heading toward Woden Cemetery.
The victim then ran to the Woden Police Station and reported the incident.
Police say the man was Caucasian, 165cm tall, aged either in his late teens or early 20s, wearing a black hooded jumper and dark-coloured pants.
