Despite recording slightly above average maximum temperatures through 2011, our overall average of 13.4 degrees makes this the coldest year in 11 years.
This is despite the warming trend observed across southern Australia in recent decades, Weather Channel chief meteorologist Dick Whitaker said.
"Minimum temperatures were at 6.4 degrees, near average and the lowest in 15 years, but maximum temperatures at 20.3 degrees were 0.6 degrees warmer than normal," Mr Whitaker said.
"Despite temperatures being on the warm side our overall average temperature of 13.4 degrees this year was the coldest in 11 years."
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the coolest average day for 2010 was 13.7 degrees, recorded at Canberra Airport.
Not only did we esxperience the coldest year in 11 years, but Canberra also recorded its coldest start to summer in 47 years with an average temperature of only 15.2 degrees. The hottest day in December, so far, has been 28.8 degrees on Christmas Day.
Tomorrow's temperature was forecast to hit 28, which is nowhere near hot enough to beat last year's New Year's Eve - 33.9 degrees, and December 2010's hottest day.
Fear not though, the first week of 2012 is forecast to have daily maximums over 30 degrees with the mercury to hit a scorching 34 on January 3.
