Firefighters also rescued a lap top computer, camera, surf board and other possessions from the Kevin Street House.
An ACT Fire and Rescue spokesman said the fire in the three-bedroom house was extinguished about 3.45pm, three hours after it was first reported.
It caused an estimated $200,000 damage, including to the roof, plus some water and smoke damage.
Three fire pumpers and a breathing apparatus unit are at Kevin Street trying to control the blaze in the roof.
No-one was at home when the fire started and no neighbouring properties are under threat.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
