Damien William Hanns, 26, of Farrer, was caught on police cameras striking the cyclist on Kings Avenue in June.
He had pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to charges of overtaking too closely, failing to stop and give assistance, and failing to give his details after a crash. The prosecution argued that Hanns had shown ''careless disregard'' for the victim or a ''willful blindness'' about the accident and had not turned his mind to the cyclist's injuries.
The court heard the cyclist suffered a broken finger, bruises and abrasions after being knocked over.
Magistrate Beth Campbell imposed a 12-month good-behaviour order and ordered Hanns to perform 160 hours of community service.
