Abby Cubillo relishing 'surreal' Canberra Capitals' WNBL indigenous round

Because the emerging Canberra Capitals prospect is sure she would love to see it.

Perhaps just as much as the Cubillo family will love seeing the 20-year-old Northern Territory product pull on the WNBL club's indigenous jersey for the second time.

The Capitals and the Sydney Flames will collide with both sides wearing indigenous strips at the AIS Arena on November 2.

The landmark occasion serves as another chance for Cubillo to inspire the next generation of indigenous basketball prospects to follow in her footsteps - just as her block on an Opals star did last weekend.

"My mum actually said 'it sucked because the live stream glitched so we didn't see it', so hopefully someone has got it on replay because I'm sure she would love to see that," Cubillo laughed.

"I didn't really think much. I just thought 'oh great, I've got to get back now'. And when I saw her coming at me, I wasn't sure what to do, I just blanked and then I was like 'jump!'"

Before indigenous round comes a double-header on the road - first against the Melbourne Boomers in Geelong on Friday night and then the Sydney Flames on Sunday.

Cubillo will again form part of the point guard rotation alongside French international Olivia Epoupa and Maddison Rocci on a stage she still finds hard to fathom.

The Larrakia woman is the first woman born and raised in the Northern Territory to play in the WNBL and her impact rarely goes unnoticed.

Cubillo played a huge role in promoting the Capitals' inaugural indigenous round last season and the match-worn jerseys raised $6510 for Wanniassa-based Aboriginal Youth Centre, Gugan Gulwan.

"It's very special to see myself as a role model to some, which I wouldn't have before. It's a really special feeling," Cubillo said.

"It's still surreal. Even after the games when I have little kids coming up to me saying 'can you sign my book? Can you sign this?' It's honestly crazy.

"I had a couple of indigenous places from schools and other places like the Warriors group we had done sessions with last year come up and get photos after the game which was really special.

"I've got to get a little bit more confidence in me [on-court], but watching Olivia play, I'm learning so much from her at training and throughout the game. I just need to get on a roll and use my minutes wisely.

"It's awesome, playing with the likes of Kelsey [Griffin], [Marianna] Tolo, Kia [Nurse] and Olivia, who have been all around the world and have so much experience, it's awesome."

Sunday: Sydney Flames v Canberra Capitals at Sydney Uni Sports Centre, 2pm.
