The 28-year-old Sydney man had been driving a panel van when he collided with the 59-year-old woman's sedan the day before.
The van, which had been travelling south along the Federal Highway, was a crumpled mass of metal and police rescue services spent more than 40 minutes cutting the man free from the wreckage.
Another man was taken to Canberra Hospital with head, chest and spinal injuries. Brian Adams, 36 and also from Sydney, had been a passenger in the panel van.
In another tragedy on the same day, Nowra police reported the death of a 69-year-old man who was knocked to the ground when he stepped off the kerb between parked cars in Bombaderry. The accident took the NSW road toll for the holiday season for that year to 18.
Canberra's road toll for the same period remained at one with the death of Christopher Routledge, 18, of Stirling who's car overturned on Streeton Drive.
The ACT road toll so far in 2019 stands at six. A total of nine deaths were recorded on the roads in 2018.
