Canberra United striker Leena Khamis considers calling time on W-League career

So as another series comes to a close, the Canberra United striker has started to wonder whether it's time to hang up the boots.

Khamis is weighing up her future in the league and could be set to play her final home match when Canberra host Adelaide United at McKellar Park on Sunday.

She's made over 100 appearances across stints with Canberra, Sydney FC and the Western Sydney Wanderers, and sits seventh on the all-time scoring list with 41 goals.

The former Matilda will move back to Sydney at the end of the season and play in the city's premier league before making a call on her future.

"It has been a long time and it does get to a point when you start to think maybe it's time," Khamis said.

"You just know. The body doesn't recover as well.

"But it opens up other things, I have a life outside of football to look forward to now.

"I'll never give up the game completely, whether it's at club or social level. One day in the future if I have kids, I'll be taking them to games. Football will forever be in my heart and wherever I end up, I'll always love the game."

Khamis won't have to look far for W-League content should she retire, vowing to cheer on her Canberra teammate and younger sister Sham from the stands.

The Khamis sisters reunited in Canberra for their sixth season together at the end of last year, and Leena says it's special to potentially finish her career next to Sham.

"One of the highlights of my W-League career has been playing alongside my sister," Khamis said.

"To finish with her is special for me and for our family and friends.

"We've played so many games together and there's definitely a lot of banter and there'll definitely be more between us on and off the field.

"I'm just looking forward to being in the stands and supporting her. She has the rest of her career to look forward to and I'm looking to support her in the way she has through my whole career as well."

Finishing her W-League career in Canberra would be a fitting end, given Khamis and her now coach Heather Garriock were foundation players at Sydney FC.

They both found the back of the net in the league's opening weekend and Khamis went on to claim the inaugural golden boot.

"That's actually so funny, it'll be a pretty good story to say," Khamis laughed.

"I started my W-League career with Heather, we won a championship in season two and now we're finishing together. That's pretty cool.

"She's a close friend of mine and she's my coach, I respect her in so many ways and we'll forever have these memories together."

Sunday's clash will mark Garriock's final home match as Canberra United coach after Capital Football opted not to renew her contract beyond this season.

It comes after the club failed to make the top-four during her three-year reign, having already dropped out of finals contention.

Canberra sits sixth on the ladder with two matches remaining, conceding 15 goals in the past four games without being able to score one of their own.

Their round-12 clash with dungeon-dwellers Adelaide looms as a chance to rectify their season and send Garriock off on a high.

"We missed out on finals which is disappointing but we've got two games left and we can potentially finish fifth," Khamis said.

"That's our goal. Our focus is on the last two games to get a couple of wins and finish on a high."
