NSW police charged 50-year-old Alan William Delaney last year over the alleged assault of a 46-year-old man on Boxing Day morning on Trinculo Place under the Queens Bridge in Queanbeyan.
At the time, police alleged Mr Delaney punched the 46-year-old repeatedly until he collapsed.
The 46-year-old was found semi-conscious by police and was taken to Queanbeyan Hospital but later died from his injuries, police said.
A specialist investigation, Strike Force Jinalee, was set up by police following the incident. This led to Mr Delaney's arrest.
He was arrested on December 27 at his Lowe Street home. Police charged him with manslaughter, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and having custody of a knife in a public place.
Following further investigations, police said they would upgrade the 50-year-old man's charge of manslaughter to murder.
The matter came before Queanbeyan Local Court on Tuesday, but Mr Delaney did not physically appear in court.
Mr Delaney did not apply for bail and the case was adjourned until April 7.
