A $200k fast-track to make change rooms 'female friendly'

The government started work on facilities at Amaroo, Wanniassa and Deakin, spending $200,000 to make change rooms female friendly for the future.

It's part of a wider plan to ensure women and girls feel comfortable playing sport at all levels, with the government also spending $500,000 to upgrade the Canberra Stadium facilities.

The upgrades include: lockable showers, power points, toilet cubicles, privacy screens and shelving. The Amaroo, Wanniassa and Deakin projects were given the go ahead during the sporting coronavirus shutdown.

It is hoped team sports will resume in mid July, but the government is yet to outline the key dates for contact training and games to restart.

Meanwhile, Netball ACT will launch NetFit sessions in the coming weeks after finalising a partnership with former players Sarah Wall and Kim Green.

Wall will be in Canberra to launch the skills-based sessions from June 16, with Netball ACT's State League expected to start on July 16.

"We've long held a great relationship with NetFit and are excited to be able to roll this fitness option out for ACT's netballers of all ages and abilities," said Netball ACT boss David Marjoribanks. "Our main focus is the health and wellbeing of our netball community, and we are excited about the opportunity to get them moving again.

"We all know the benefits of physical exercise towards the mental health of young people and amidst the uncertainty of this pandemic we are really keen to work in a pro-active manner in providing our netballers safe, and importantly fun, options to return to the court."
