Giants captain Jo Harten ready for Super Netball fixture pile up

And the star import is hopeful Channel Nine will expand its coverage of the sport to include what could become a regular run of midweek fixtures as the competition navigates the COVID-19 pandemic.

Super Netball announced on Tuesday rounds two and three would be played back-to-back over the coming week, with eight matches to be played over five days.

The Giants will meet the Adelaide Thunderbirds at Queensland State Netball Centre on Saturday, then face the West Coast Fever at the same venue on Tuesday evening.

The condensed format is likely to continue for the remainder of the season, another change Super Netball players have had to take on the chin after an unprecented start to the competition.

One drawback of the midweek matches is they won't be broadcast on Channel Nine. However, they'll still be available to watch on Telstra TV and the Netball Live app.

Super Netball is releasing the draw in blocks and Harten hopes they'll be able to secure free-to-air coverage of future midweek fixtures.

"I'm sure if Channel Nine has enough notice and it's in their capability, they'll do whatever they can to put netball on television," Harten said.

"I think there's enough interest there and I know the television audience is growing for our game as well. It's making sure it works for all parties involved.

"It's a stretch for us to play midweek, we haven't practiced that before. It's something we're trying to take on the chin this year and I'm sure Channel Nine will do everything they can to get as much netball out there to the public.

"At times it's just luck of the draw in that regard. So hopefully there'll be more coverage as the season continues."

Channel Nine's broadcast of the Giants' 63-61 loss to the NSW Swifts was interrupted in the fourth quarter to show Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews' emergency COVID-19 update.

Nine was criticised for not showing the score or the post-match press conferences after switching back from the emergency update, instead continuing with their NRL pre-game coverage.

All eight Super Netball clubs are based in Queensland due to border closures and restrictions impose by state governments amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Harten says the Giants have had to rearrange their training schedule to accomodate for the condensed format, reducing physical workloads between matches.

She's also wary of the Thunderbirds' form, despite losing their opening-round match 74-62 to Fever.

"They're always the team that is gritty and hardworking, they've got a lot of ambition to win because they haven't had much success in the past few seasons," Harten said.

"We're always wary of the Thunderbirds because they're out to take points and victories wherever they can.

"We've prepared quite hard for the game but our main focus at the moment is on ourselves and how we play our own game. There's little things to work on, finishing off games and quarters is a big takeaway."
