ACT Brumbies winger Andy Muirhead backs Rugby Australia's State of Union concept

Muirhead has signed a two-year contract extension with the ACT Brumbies which will keep him with the Super Rugby AU favourites until the end of 2022.

Now the Brisbane product is set for a homecoming in round 10 when the Brumbies travel north to face the Queensland Reds on Saturday night.

The clash looms as a potential grand final rehearsal with the Brumbies set to host the decider at Canberra Stadium on September 19 amid a year of upheaval for Rugby Australia.

Now the code's supremos are pushing on with plans for a representative match - or matches -between NSW and Queensland in a State of Union series amid a rethink of rugby's broadcast offerings.

Muirhead is relishing the chance to launch a representative career if the answer to rugby league's storied representative series gains the tick of approval.

"Definitely, I'll always put my hand up to play some more footy and if there is a game like that that comes about, I'll definitely try to put my hand up for it," Muirhead said.

"I'm sure there is going to be a lot of boys putting their hand up, especially from our team. We're a team that is quite diverse in terms of where we come from.

"I'm sure if something like that pops up, there will be a fair bit of excitement and banter. It would be something to look forward to if that does happen."

But make no mistake about it, for now Queensland remains the enemy - because Muirhead feels right at home in Brumbies colours and he wants to keep it that way in Super Rugby.

That's why the 27-year-old was so keen to extend his stay with Australia's most successful rugby union franchise after making his debut for the Brumbies in 2017.

Muirhead says competition for spots is fuelling the Brumbies' charge towards the domestic title, adding "you come off the training paddock just as sore as games these days".

Now Muirhead is desperate to retain his place in the club's match day squad of 23 and repay the faith as they brace for the domestic competition's biggest road trip on Saturday.

"Obviously being in Queensland I didn't get any opportunity at all," Muirhead said.

"Speaking to a few friends and mentors of mine at the time, they thought it would be a good opportunity to come down here and try to grab an opportunity that was here.

"That was pretty much my reason for coming down, thankfully the Brumbies, Dan and Bernie [Stephen Larkham] at the time, gave me an opportunity.

"I can still remember that Saturday or Sunday when I got called up to go on tour and then eventually debuting. On the back of that, I didn't think I would stick around as long as I have now, I didn't think I would get that opportunity again. I'm pretty excited to get another two years under the belt.

"I probably owe a lot to this club, they gave me my first opportunity. Competition is quite tough for the coaches at the moment, picking an XV, especially coming up over the next couple of weeks.

"It makes us train better and makes us play a little better as well."
