A majority of Australia's eight state and territory Liberal leaders will be women after the Canberra Liberals elected former university law lecturer Elizabeth Lee to the top job.

Alistair Coe decided not to recontest the leadership at a party room meeting on Tuesday.
The election means women now lead the Liberals in the ACT, Queensland, NSW, WA and the Northern Territory.
Ms Lee was first elected to the ACT assembly in 2016 and took on the shadow environment and disability portfolios.
She hails from the same multi-member electorate, Kurrajong, as Labor chief minister Andrew Barr and Greens leader Shane Rattenbury, whose party picked up six seats at the election.
Her deputy will be Giulia Jones, who has been a member of the assembly since 2012 and represents the seat of Murrumbidgee.
The Liberals hold nine seats in the 25-member assembly with Labor holding 10.
