Melbourne's maximum handed the Capitals a 73-70 win after the two-time defending champions trailed for most of the quarter.
The final eight seconds of the match was the first time the Capitals had been in front since late in the third quarter.
Kelsey Griffin was instrumental in the win draining 21 points from 26 minutes off the bench. Maddison Rocci was the only other Capitals player who made it into double figures, scoring 11 points.
The Capitals will take a coach trip to Townsville on Friday, from where they will play out the rest of the truncated WNBL season.
