Brendan Doggett looks to make a statement to Sydney Thunder skipper Callum Ferguson

Every ball serves as a reminder of what Doggett can do as the Thunder quick chases a return to the XI for a Big Bash clash with the Perth Scorchers on Canberra on Tuesday.

Which is why the 26-year-old is so keen to rattle his skipper's stumps at training - or take his head off.

Doggett and Chris Tremain are the pair waiting in the wings for a shot in the Thunder's pace attack, which is set to be bolstered by New Zealand Black Caps right-arm quick Adam Milne next week.

"It's always a competition, no matter who is batting or who is bowling. As a bowler you're always trying to get the batsman out, and as a fast bowler you're always trying to take their head off as well," Doggett said, tongue in cheek.

"Especially when Ferg, the captain, gets in there. You want to remind him of what you can do, so Ferg is a big target for all the quicks.

"We've got such experience, Ben Cutting has come from the Heat and has played 100 Twenty20 games.

"Adam Milne has played for his country. It'll be great to watch him do well, come out and bowl gas. I don't mind watching it, but it's a bit hard when games get tight like that and you can't do anything about it.

"As a young fast bowler, I feed off those guys, they give me tips and advice which is all I can ask for.

"We've done all the hard work during training and getting ourselves ready to play. I'm sure the time will come, it's a long tournament so I'm sure we'll get an opportunity at some stage.

"If not, hopefully we're winning games."

The Thunder are midway through a week-long break between games, boasting one win and one loss after a frantic start to the tournament.

They will meet the Scorchers at Manuka Oval on Tuesday to kick start a hectic week in which they will play three games.

Ferguson's side will ride a wave of confidence into the Perth clash having stunned the Brisbane Heat on the back of a rampant Daniel Sams display earlier this week.

"That was a really important one for us, to be honest we were behind the game for most of it," Doggett said.

"We'd rather sit two wins and zero losses, but 1-1 is fine. Hopefully we take some momentum into the rest of the tournament.

"We obviously had two games early on so we've got quite a big break now between our second and third games. The boys got a few days off and now we're back into training to get ready for the next one."
