Filming for Liam Neeson movie Blacklight wraps up in Canberra after late night car cash scene

In the dead of night, on the outskirts of Canberra, filming for Liam Neeson's next action film Blacklight wrapped up in the capital with a high speed car crash scene.

It was the end of a week of filming which saw Canberra's streets become those of the US Capital of Washington, DC.

The high-speed chase and Porsche crash was filmed on Tambreet St, just off Majura Parkway from 11pm Wednesday well into the early hours of Thursday with crews expecting to wrap up by 6am.

Producers wanted to keep the late-night filming under wraps with media denied access on set.

Screeching tyres could be heard coming from the underpass, as crews reset the scene every 10 to 15 minutes until they got the perfect shot.

A Porsche came screeching around the corner into the underpass followed by a black SUV before another vehicle crashed into both front-on.

The crash itself, which was filmed first at around 11pm, didn't go as producers had originally planned, with crew needing to source a third car for the scene and delaying the process by a couple of hours.

The crashed vehicle was towed away and another Porsche was later used to shoot the lead-up to the collision.

To create the effect of rain, a water truck was brought in to wet the road.

The turn-offs to Tambreet St from Majura Parkway north and southbound were closed from early Wednesday afternoon while crews got prepared for the late night shoot.

By sunrise on Thursday the road was reopened and crews bid goodbye to the capital after a week of filming which kicked off in Civic with a high octane car chase.

Blacklight producer Paul Currie and other crew members have applauded Canberra's quiet streets, nondescript cityscape and efficient approval processes. Giving hope to some the ACT could be the new LA.
