Mandatory vaccine for ACT hotel quarantine workers

About 70 per cent of the ACT's 4000 front-line workers eligible for the vaccine in the first stage of the rollout have received at least one dose.

Acting chief health officer Vanessa Johnston said that was a "conservative estimate".

She said some staff initially counted in the eligible number may have moved to a different role, or deferred their vaccination to the next stage to receive it at a general practice.

"1a is still rolling out and those workers continue to access either the Garran surge centre or a range of GPs now, to be able to access that vaccine," Dr Johnston said.

"It will be a condition of employment, should we receive further government facilitated flights, you must be vaccinated to work in the hotel quarantine system."

Dr Johnston said 84 per cent of quarantine workers or those who are likely to have direct or indirect contact with a positive case, had received the vaccination.

The decision to make the vaccine mandatory for quarantine workers mirrors the announcement made by the Queensland chief health officer Jeanette Young on Thursday, that all front-line workers dealing with COVID-19 cases must have the vaccine.

It came as the Brisbane lockdown ended early, at midday on Thursday.

The ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith announced travel restrictions with Brisbane were removed and the 2600 people in quarantine in Canberra would be released.

Anyone who has been to a COVID-19 exposure site will be required to quarantine for 14 days since leaving.

Queensland reported one locally acquired case in the past 24 hours, which was linked to an existing cluster.
